NeMLA 2020 Panel: Experiences of Emerging Women, Trans, and Non-Binary Scholars in the Academy (51st Northeast Modern Language Association Convention)
Event: 51st Northeast Modern Language Association Convention
This lightning roundtable seeks to amplify experiences of emerging women, trans, and non-binary scholars from a range of backgrounds across graduate, contingent, and junior institutional stature as they navigate careers in the academy. Participants will offer 3-5 minute “lightning presentations” that (a) share experience, (b) offer advice, and (c) demand change across micro and macro structures of the academy. Following the presentations will be ample time for open discussion between the participants and audience members.
Foregrounding intersectionality in practice and politics, this roundtable ultimately seeks to foster dialogue across experiences. One goal of this discussion is to call attention to the diverse experiences of emerging women, trans, and non-binary scholars grounded in this particular historical moment in order to make them visible to academics more advanced in their careers. The roundtable will also focus on building solidarity and support across intersecting forms of precarity in the profession. Finally, the organizers hope to brainstorm practical, actionable methods during the session that will take stock of the present state of the profession, as well as look to the future for concrete ways to promote equity in the academy.
