NeMLA 2020: Completing Your Application Dossier: Advice on Writing Teaching, Diversity, and Research Statements (NeMLA 2020)

The academic job market is famously difficult to navigate. Ironically, the decrease in job opportunities has prompted an increase in the number of materials required by each application. While NeMLA’s Job Clinic currently offers one-on-one mentoring for Cover Letters, CVs, and Mock Interviews—all of which are a standard part of the application for any academic job—we do not currently offer any guidance on other types of application materials. While most advice on the job market focuses on Cover Letters and CVs, these additional documents are a critical part of your application.

This roundtable will offer practical advice on crafting several types of “statements”—teaching statements, diversity statements, and research statements. We will define each of these materials and discuss the length, structure, and content of these documents, as well as how they articulate with the other materials in your dossier. Topics we hope to discuss include:

· The definition of each type of statement

· What to include in each type of statement

· The structure of each type of statement

· How to tailor each statement for an institution

· The relationship between these materials and your Cover Letter/CV

· Potential pitfalls of these statements

· The difference between these statements and other similar documents (e.g. statements of teaching interests, dissertation abstracts)

Please submit a 300 word abstract and 100 word bio by September 30, 2019. You will need to create an user account through the NeMLA website (nemla.org) in order to submit an abstract.
