"Tin Soliders and Nixon Coming"//Schizophrenia & Capitalism Part II//Literary & Political Responses to|from 1970 (Annual Northeast Modern Language Association Convention)
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
Organization: Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA
Event: Annual Northeast Modern Language Association Convention
Our Round Table at the 2020 Northeast Modern Language Association Convention in Boston assembles elements of these literary dialogues and brings them into conversation with cultural conversations that emerged as a new decade began a half-century ago, in 1970.
Nixon’s Secret War in Cambodia, Kent State, the New Haven Nine trial, and the first Earth Day punctuate the seizure of the Mayflower II by members the American Indian Movement at Plymouth, Massachusetts and the extraterrestrial drama of Apollo 13. 1970 reflects a collision of SPACES, and Places. At the same time the year also witnessed the publication of Toni Morrison’s Bluest Eye, Kate Millett’s _Sexual Politics_, Joan Didion’s _Play it Where it Lays_, as well as poetry by Michael S. Harper (Dear John, Dear Coltrane), Amiri Baraka (It’s Nation Time) and Clark Coolidge (Space) along with children’s classics Frog and Toad (Arnold Lobel) and Mickey and The Night Kitchen (Maurice Sendak).
We consider the legacies of Nixon and the Weather Underground town house explosion. We ask about social space in the final years of Hoover’s FBI and COINTELPRO. We recall Biafra, The Last Poets and Ondaatje’s Collected Works of Billy the Kid. We discuss these transformations and transitions with respect to fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction produced in and written about the United States, fifty years ago, “quiet as its kept.”
Join us for a Round Table Style discussion of up to 8 participants: brief presentations outlining core questions, concerns and approaches, followed by exchanges among panelists and conversation between participants and audience. We listed as are panel number 18258 on NeMAL
