The role and the scope of political identity, along with political engagement and democraitc citizenship, in modern democracy is constantly changing. This provides the grounds for giving more profound considerations to public engagement in order to better understand contemporary political identities. There has never been a systematic body of work or a comprehensive “Handbook” dealing with political identity. This seems somewhat surprising. There are excellent books out there that touch upon issues of political identity. However, to date there is no volume that has been attributed solely to investigate, discuss, deconstruct, analyse or test the concept of political identity, even at a time when issues of political identity are at the forefront of political debates.
