The International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment of Food is the leading conference series on sustainability of food systems worldwide. Every second year it unites 400+ scholars and practitioners from 40+ countries working in academia, industry, and public institutions.

Organized by leading research and practice institutions dealing with the sustainability improvements of food production, each time the Conference brings the spirit of innovation and forces research and industry to work together towards sustainable agri-food systems. The 12th International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment of Food will take place on 13th – 16th Oktober 2020 in Berlin at Ellington Hotel Berlin. It is chaired by the German Institute of Food Technologies (DIL) in collaboration with the Center for Sustainable Leadership at University of Witten/Herdecke (ZNU), corsus – corporate sustainability and thinkstep.

You are invited to submit abstracts matching the following conference topics:

1. Novel trends & developments:
- Designing sustainable food systems
- Novel trends / developments in food production systems
- Implications of smart food systems (digitalization and block chains in food systems)
- Impacts of novel food processing technologies and Artificial Intelligence

2. Sustainability evaluation models:
- Evaluation models and how to deal with normativity
- Sustainability assessment & evaluation approaches in food
- Value scales (e.g. SDGs) in food eLCA, sLCA, LCC & LCSA

3. Food logistics & retailing:
- Disruptive logistics of novel food systems: rethinking food miles
- Grocery retail bankruptcy or evolution?
- Direct and indirect impacts of food logistics

4. Challenges in modelling & data:
- Tackling complexity of food systems (modelling, cyber-physical systems, LCSA)
- Opening the data on food for LCA (databases, tools and software developments)
- New models for food LCA

5. Methodological challenges:
- Impact assessment in sLCA
- Biodiversity impact assessment
- Soil quality impact assessment
- Assessment of animal welfare in LCA
- Assessment of health & well-being, nutritional LCA

6. Case studies:
- Circular economy case studies in food systems
- Assessment of alternative food production systems (e.g. “lab” food, insects, non-crop based food production systems)
- Assessment of alternative agricultural systems (e.g. aquaponics, vertical farming, urban gardening, “double-use” systems)
- Food waste or by-product? Making the sense of side-streams utilization
- Single market and single benchmark for food products (PEF, labelling and communication)
