Growing up in Latin America: Narratives of Precarity, Postcolonialism, Violence (NeMLA 2021)

Philadelphia
Organization: NeMLA
Event: NeMLA 2021
Categories: Postcolonial, Hispanic & Latino, Caribbean & Caribbean Diasporas
Event Date: 2021-03-11 to 2021-03-14 Abstract Due: 2020-09-30

The experience of growing up in Latin America for the past two centuries has been marked by constant negotiations with precarity, postcoloniality and multiple forms of violence. Numerous literary and audiovisual productions have drawn attention to this issue. In this session, we invite critical examinations of coming-of-age narratives and bildungsroman dealing with bi-cultural or multi-cultural identities, picaresque and heterodox processes of learning, non hetero-normative sexualities, as well as other alternative processes of development and growth. We are particularly interested in critical approaches that understand these narratives from perspectives such as theory of affects, ecocriticism, postolonialism, gender studies, biopolitics, transmediatic studies, and cosmopolitan discussions.
