Organization: Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA)
Plesae submit to this virtual (online) panel of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA):
The panel on "Transforming and Transcending Single Stories" invites proposals that address how we can challenge, transform, and transcend single stories so that we break current stereotypes, discriminatory practices, assumptions, and myths about what is different, alien, and unknown. Conscious attempts to resist single narratives prompt us to pay attention to efforts that exclude and undermine diverse perspectives, and that limit our understanding of who we are, how we view others, and the choices we make when we interact face-to-face or through social media on a local, national, and global level.
Panelists are encouraged to address and challenge accepted narratives surrounding climate change and sustainability, race and ethnicity, immigration, refugees, citizenship, LGBTQIA rights, women’s rights, human rights, and additional areas of interest that can benefit from multiple and competing stories so that we no longer ignore the complex narratives that surround us.
Addressing the detrimental results of single stories, and encouraging critical evaluation of what we hear and read, is especially important in a time when news outlets and social media venues thrive on presenting “truth” as a single and indisputable fact.
You can find the session description and submit your proposal at https://pamla.ballastacademic.com/Home/S/18108. Abstracts are due by April 15, 2021.
PAMLA 2021 will be held from November 11-14, 2021, with both online and in-person sessions. You can attend at the Sahara Las Vegas and Virtually!
