Latin American ARTivism: Promoting Anti-Racism Action Via Art and Activism
ARTivism can be defined as a special form of activism performed by artists who, through groundbreaking creative expressions, promote political interventions and cultural reformation via artistical manifestations. Officially theorized in the 1990s among the Chicano community, ARTivism is now a globalized movement. As ARTivist Emory Douglas states in his essay “Art in Service for the People”, “In order to create accurate images of awareness, we must participate in the changing of society and understand the political nature of art, because there is no such thing as art for art’s sake.” The cultural revolution carried-out by ARTivists around the world is grounded in the awareness that neutrality and indifference are forms of denial that support systems of oppression and injustice. Within this intellectual framework, this panel offers an interdisciplinary excursus of contemporary forms of Latin American ARTivism while posing the following questions: 1. Can an anti-racism revolution be fueled by celluloid and paint? 2. What role does art play in the definition of racial identity and the creation of processes of political visibility? By exposing its audience to the latest debates in the field of contemporary socio-cultural movements, this panel will provide them with the information necessary to navigate contemporary Latin American racialized aesthetics.
We invite contributions focusing on contemporary forms of aesthetic activism aimed at dismantling structural embodiments of racism in Latin America.
