Mediated Ruins in Contemporary Landscapes of the Americas

Description:
The notion of ruin has a number of entries: it is a subject, a process, a certain type of building or space. Too often, it is a sign of loss, failure, destruction, and of decay, but conversely, a ruin can also signal creative potential as a building or space that can be reimagined and occupied again in psychological, practical, and material ways. Spanning temporal, spatial, and environmental questions, this panel will look to explore how the ruin has been redefined in recent history through poetic, artistic, theoretical, and architectural interactions. The focus of the panel is to engage with ruins from the vantage point of the contemporary era, thus the buildings or structures rendered in the works may come from earlier moments in time, but the mediums themselves should be inscribed within the last centennial.
We encourage proposals that are open but not restricted to engage with the following questions:
How has the notion of the ruin been mediated by contemporary artistic, literary, and cinematic mediums? How do the material, visual or textual elements of specific mediums engage with architectural forms of dilapidated farmhouses, foreclosed real-estate developments, abandoned malls, semi-demolished blocks of social housing, sites transformed by natural disasters, or other kinds of ruins? What are the aesthetics and politics of the ruin today? How can close readings of the ruin as a mediated form, transcend established narratives of speculation, excess, and surplus created by capitalism? How, as Jonnathon Opazo Hernandez has argued, can these mediums transcend the notion of the ruin moving from a site of destruction to a kind of horizon for thinking through and across time?

We welcome submissions from different disciplines including literature, film studies, art history, architecture, and cultural studies.
