Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference, April 12-13, 2024
The Art History Graduate Student Union at Binghamton University invites proposal submissions for the 29th Annual Crossing the Boundaries Conference from any historical or disciplinary approach that considers futurity and subversion. We want to approach this topic within the perspective of “haunting,” a concept which is to be thought of as an emergence of the repressed status from social problems such as racism, gender, and stereotypes. Further, we want to think of these ghostly effects as the meltdown and turning from the visual underside of culture, or what we have termed ghostly matter.
Based on a foundational commitment to crossing boundaries through critical research, this year’s conference considers subversion as exploring possibilities beyond, outside, or against linear histories of art, discourse, and single trajectories of influence. Instead we will favor critical accounts that consider subversive acts, including counter-visualities, which possess a focus on futurity—ultimately aiming to (re)orient research towards issues of inclusivity, communities, and collectives to come. To create an inclusive and subversive conference, we welcome topics from far-reaching disciplines, but will give special attention to discussions of Queer (Art) Histories and Post-Colonial or Decolonial methodologies. This is meant to reflect and encourage the opening up of meaning made possible by reorienting frameworks of investigation and knowledge production.
We welcome MA, PhD students, independent scholars, and artists that consider topics, such as:

? Film Studies
? Aesthetics & Historiography
? Questions of the Global
? Posthumanism and Humanism
? Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence
Proposals for individual papers (20 minutes maximum) should be no more than 250 words in length and may be sent by email, with a current graduate level CV, and short Bio to krace1@binghamton.edu (Attn: Proposal). Deadline for submissions is Friday, February 29, 2024. Notification of accepted presentations will be sent March 20, 2024.
