CFP: International Seminar on ‘Emergent Forms of Storytelling: Film, Media, Web’
Jadavpur University, Kolkata
Organization: Jadavpur University
Concept Note
Storytelling has undergone a rapid transformation in the last few decades. They have changed in terms of advances in technology, audience engagement and their forms themselves. The emergence of new media platforms, evolving film techniques, video games, and interactive web experience are reshaping narrative forms and their consumption across the world. We have seen changes in filmmaking blur the differences between narrative forms, thus creating hybrid modes of storytelling. We are in an age where media comes to us filtered through algorithms. Interactive films on streaming platforms that give choices to the audience, websites dedicated to seamless transitions of ‘real’ images, virtually crafted ‘artificial’ images, and the narrative cultures are manufactured through algorithmic codes that create tailored image consumption for us. This seminar aims to explore the multiple dimensions of emergent storytelling forms, offering a platform for scholars and practitioners to investigate how contemporary mediums are redefining narrative structures as well as audience interaction.
The Department of Film Studies, Jadavpur University, invites papers from Research Scholars & Ph.D Candidates that address the evolving ways in which narratives across various mediums are constructed, experienced, and interpreted. We seek to understand how these new forms of storytelling challenge traditional models, and create opportunities for new expression and engagement.
We welcome papers that explore, but are not limited to, the following themes:
Innovations in Film Narrative:
New cinematic techniques and their impact on narrative structures.
The role of virtual reality (VR) in the new image culture across platforms.
Interactive films and branching narratives.
