Defiant Narrativity: Risk, Resonance, and (R)evolution (NeMLA) (Northeast Modern Language Association Convention)
Philadelphia, PA
Organization: Northeast Modern Language Association
Event: Northeast Modern Language Association Convention
This creative session invites readings or performances of original work that experiments with, challenges, and/or disturbs received notions of structure and narrative form. Short fiction, novel excerpts, creative non-fiction, diaries, fragments, literary collages, project-books, graphic commentaries, prose poetry, and other stylized word-beings that purposefully question, expand, and/or play with what narrativity is and can do are welcome here.
As the experimental fiction writer Lance Olsen writes, “Through the constant act of disturbance as a way of being—a passionate, permanent incarnation of the examined life—extreme narrativity asks us to envision the text of the text, the text of our lives, and the text of the world other than they are, and thus asks us to contemplate the idea of fundamental change in all three.” (“(Trans)forms as Philosophy”) This creative session seeks narratives that demonstrate how experiment and change is necessary for texts (and perhaps even our lives) to move beyond complacency. The loud, the quiet, the exquisite tremor: offer your most daring. Those gathered will listen.
