AI in Second Language Education: Promises, Perils, Paradigms, and Perspectives (NeMLA)
Philadelphia
Organization: NeMLA
Event: NeMLA
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the second language classroom is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field that aims to enhance teaching and learning experiences. AI can assist in the creation of teaching tools, personalize learning paths, develop interactive games and lesson plans, facilitate multimedia learning by converting text to audio and video to text, as well as generate multimodal activities. However, its adoption is not without challenges, including concerns regarding data privacy, assessment, potential biases, and equitable access. As AI continues to expand within the field of language education, it promises substantial opportunities for innovation and enhancement in language pedagogy and learning processes. Nonetheless, the expansion of AI should be approached with prudence and critical inquiry. This panel invites scholars, researchers, educators, and industry professionals to explore affordances and constraints of AI tools, reflect on AI as a critical topic in itself, and examine its transformative potential and far-reaching implications for language teaching and learning.
Topics of inquiry may include, but are not limited to:
AI-Driven Language Learning Tools
AI and Language Assessment
Ethical Considerations in AI for Language Learning
Impact of AI on Language Teaching Practices
Equity and Access
Current and Future Trends in AI and Language Learning
