Transfictional and Transgeneric. Lingering Figures and Wandering Genres in the Literature of 20th and 21st centuries
Online conference
Organization: Universität Bremen, Universidade de Coimbra
The literature of the 20th and 21st centuries seems constantly concerned with examining how a text can challenge established textual categories. From the crossing of fictional boundaries to the blurring of lines that differentiate genres, literature and other arts can push the limits of narrative and poetic parameters; create shadows of doubt about the ontology of characters and the logical stability of a fictional world; and confront readers with unexpected situations in which they must devise strategies to solve the puzzles presented to them.
We are searching for contributions which:
• explore the lyrical nature of prose texts, e.g. rhyme, melody, rhythm, tropes and rhetoric figures.
• explore, analogically, the narrativity of non-prosaic texts.
• ask how fictional figures (as characters and narrators) move from one text, genre, media, culture, and political/historical context to another, taking on a different shape.
• analyze how characters convey similar or distinct socio-political problems in different genres, and how they help to create an unconventional, censorious work, or lose their formerly mutinous quality.
• compare, in this regard, modern, postmodern and contemporary texts and their artistic strategies.
• examine other possibilities related to the idea of crossing boundaries between genres and media.
• work with other metaleptic aspects of fictional figures in Literature.
