The Challenges of the First Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.): Ecumenicity, Cosmopolitanism, Universality – Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Relevance
Bucharest, Romania
Organization: University of Bucharest, Faculty of Roman Catholic Theology
The symposium is aimed at analyzing the momentous contributions of the First Council of Nicaea, with an emphasis on the council’s historical context. Of particular interest is the tentative transition from local to universal forms of synodal legislation, as initiated at Nicaea.
Also, we shall examine the interweaving of the religious and the political dimensions within the Council’s articulation, the aspiration for an ecumenical solution to the tension between localism and universalism, as well as the enduring impact of Nicaean ecumenicity within and without the ecclesial realm, in the interconfessional and intercultural dialogue.
We offer an interdisciplinary venue for the furthering and the problematization of the Nicaean vision within new perspectives, with novel thematic connections and innovative practical applications.
