Organization: Lusófona University
Caleidoscopio invites you to submit papers for its series 2, vol. 1, no. 1: under the topic “In Media-Making: Start-on-and-go-over-Media”
Archives, while carrying out the operation of the gaze, function like a mirror: they point to a spectral exteriority. The archive is of the order of the phantasmagorical and, by definition, they are phantasmatic. This approach points out to what Harun Farocki’s stressed as the definition of a phantom or operational image, images that are built from a non-human perspective, although they call-in human agency.
Why should humans be witnessing and/or scrutinizing images productions? Is that still a need? Are there any ethical or aesthetical motives or meanings to it?
The profane space that looks at us and that connects the very understanding of all subjectivities, is outside, in the non-located media-sphere. Moreover, what otherness brings is always this new media-space, which cannot still be in control, because the surface on which the meaning is made is what can be considered a reality or desire and that could be played-out in this media-sphere. Where there is opacity there remains a questions: are we afraid of the otherness because it is opaque, not transparent, or because otherness functions as a surface of signs or symbols, which are always revealing something that is behind what is impossible to grasp, that its, a matter of non-will, or, the sublime object of desire?

Open to publishing outstanding research in a wide range of topics within and on the margins of the communication sciences, Caleidoscopio specialises in critical approaches to communication and media technologies.
Founded in 2002, Caleidoscopio returns in early 2025 for its second series. With an interdisciplinary aim, Caleidoscopio operates at the crossroads of philosophy of communication, media theory, philosophy of technology, critical theory and aesthetics.
The journal has a special focus the intersection of communication, media and arts in contemporary societies – from the proliferation of visual culture and developments in the cultural industries to the aestheticization of politics and everyday life, from questions of the archive, materialities to virtualization and operational media – and welcomes contributions that address the implications of contemporary media aesthetics on the theorizing of communication itself.
Caleidoscopio aims to be a worldwide multi-lingual (English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French) open-source high-standard platform for critical and speculative thinking in all areas it covers.
