Siamo tuttx antifascistx[1]: Creative and Critical International Responses to the Rise of the Far Right

Call for Papers 28th February – 1st May 2025

Editors: Eloise O'Dwyer-Armary & Natasha Jane Kennedy (University of Brighton)

About the Issue:

In 2024, more than one hundred countries from around the world held general elections so much so that the year has been named “the year of elections” (John & Sen, 2024). These elections have shown a “swing” towards the far right in Western countries. The National Rally in France, the Reform Party in the UK and other nationalist parties have gained in popularity and the revival of Trumpism in the USA are all examples of this political shift. Antifascist resistance has been witnessed globally, be it through political demonstrations, academic discussions, or creative/artistic mobilisations. This issue aims to record contemporary responses to the rise of the far right in the world.

We accept essays, articles, interviews, and creative responses including photography, music, film, painting, comics, prose, poetry, mixed-media and digital media creating a dialogue between scholarly approaches and the public, activist and artistic spheres. Some topics which submissions could address include, but are by no means limited to, the following:

·       Rise of the new right in the world

·       Coexisting “socialist” ideas in the far right

·       Politics of Ecofascism

·       Language acts and grammars of resistance

·       Politics of gender and reproduction

·       The value of creative outputs in political debates

·       Contemporary debates on immigration and racism

·       The ethics and impact of academic discourse

·       Local documentations of resistance to a global audience

·       Lived experiences and wellbeing of minority groups

The issue’s publication will coincide with the University of Brighton’s Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics September 2025 Conference about the gender politics of the new right. A launch event will be hosted at the conference where contributors can showcase their work (readings, presentations…).

[1] Taken from the Italian 1920s slogan “siamo tutti antifascisti” (masc.), contemporary activist literature uses the “x” in a gender-neutral slogan for a queer and feminist approach (Constanza Spina, 2024).
