Any proposals dealing with British literature and culture of the long 19th century are welcome. Of particular interest are proposals focusing on authors or works not typically discussed, and proposals that connect to the conference theme of "Palimpsests: Memory and Oblivion":

• The remembered and the forgotten

• Photography

• Romantic memory

• Victorian oblivion (“'If he could only have recovered in a complete state of oblivion as to the past, he would have been a happier man. Perhaps we should all be happier,'” he added, with a sad smile, “'if we could but completely forget!'” Wilkie Collins, The Moonstone)

• Archeological excavations

• Travel writing

• Issues of race, sexuality, class, and “others”

• The long 19th century in popular culture

• Neo Victorianism
