(Re)generating Poetry: Exploring Contemporary Poetry in Spanish (NEMLA)
Pittsburgh
Organization: NeMLA
Event: NEMLA
The literary genre of poetry has a long and important history in the intelectual and political history of Spanish speaking countries, serving at times as a marker of intellectual distinction, a repository of culture, or even a tool for revolutionary ideas. The lyrical form, however, does not currently enjoy the same prestige and popularity in academic spheres or the general public. Notwithstanding this fact, the vast amount of recent publication of books of poetry in independent and small publishing houses in Spain and Latin America demonstrate that it is not a genre in decline. This panel seeks to generate a new interest in the study of poetry by engaging in a panoramic exploration of modern and contemporary poets of Spain and Latin America. Submissions in Spanish or English that approach works of poetry from different critical perspectives are accepted.
