The Richard D. Gooder Essay Prize

This prize, named in memory of Richard Gooder (1934-2017), one of the journal’s founding editors, is aimed at doctoral students.

The Cambridge Quarterly is a journal of literary and cultural criticism with a broad remit. Our focus is largely on scholarship on Anglophone literature, but we also welcome work on writing in languages other than English.

The journal remains committed to Richard’s belief that good criticism should sharpen our appreciation of all aspects of literature and culture, and should be understandable to non-specialists, with no dilution or dulling of its critical edge. Intellectual hospitality was Richard’s style, and so this Prize welcomes a broad range of critical approaches. We are particularly interested in essays that explore the relationship between different art forms or media, including painting, film, radio, music, dance, television and literature.

There will be a prize of £300 and the winning essay will be published in the journal.

The deadline for this competition is 15 November 2025. The word limit is 7,500 including notes.
