 Abstract :

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education marks a pivotal shift in foreign language pedagogy, offering innovative tools and approaches for learners, teachers, and institutions alike. AI-powered platforms—ranging from intelligent language tutors to automated translation systems—provide personalized learning experiences, enhance communication skills, and offer immersive engagement with diverse linguistic contexts. While these developments promise efficiency and expanded access, they simultaneously raise critical questions about ethical practice, cultural preservation, and the evolving roles of educators and learners in digitally mediated classrooms.

AI-enabled tools facilitate individualized instruction, adaptive feedback, and interactive language acquisition. Students can practice pronunciation, expand vocabulary, and engage in simulated conversational scenarios with unprecedented immediacy. Teachers, in turn, are called upon to develop digital competence and pedagogical adaptability, guiding learners to critically evaluate AI-generated content and integrate technology meaningfully without diminishing the importance of human interaction. This requires a reimagining of teacher roles—from transmitters of knowledge to facilitators of learning, cultural mediators, and ethical guides in AI-driven classrooms.

The integration of AI also underscores the importance of safeguarding cultural identity within language education. Language carries cultural knowledge, values, and identity markers, and over-reliance on automated translation or content generation risks diluting these nuances. Educators must therefore adopt strategies that balance technological innovation with cultural literacy, fostering intercultural understanding, sensitivity, and ethical awareness among learners. This approach ensures that AI serves as a complement, rather than a replacement, for human-mediated linguistic and cultural engagement.

Moreover, the AI-driven landscape necessitates policy, research, and collaborative action. Multilingualism not only strengthens cross-cultural communication but also plays a strategic role in international relations and global citizenship. Teacher training programs, curriculum design, and institutional frameworks must be aligned to promote ethical AI integration, equitable access, and the preservation of linguistic diversity. This conference provides a platform to discuss emerging practices, evaluate policy implications, and explore research opportunities that support responsible, inclusive, and culturally informed foreign language education.

In conclusion, AI offers unprecedented potential to transform foreign language teaching and learning, but its benefits can only be realized through human-centred, ethical, and culturally sensitive approaches. By emphasizing teacher empowerment, learner agency, and the safeguarding of cultural identity, stakeholders can harness AI to enrich pedagogical experiences, strengthen global communication, and cultivate responsible digital citizens. The ICFL 2026 conference serves as a timely forum for educators, researchers, and policymakers to exchange insights, advance best practices, and collectively shape the future of foreign language education in a rapidly evolving digital era.
