Poetry, Rhythm, Song…or What Literature Owes to Music (Call for papers)

Algiers 2 university
Organization: Langues, dicours et inter cultures
Event: Call for papers
Categories: Literary Theory, Rhetoric & Composition, Miscellaneous
Event Date: 2026-07-15 Abstract Due: 2026-03-25

Argument
The relationship between music and literature has always been strong. In certain literary texts, music emerges as an essential mode of expression. The author can, for example, use the sounds to produce a specific effect on the reader: feelings of joy, sadness, and so on. In music, sounds are represented by musical notes, which can also convey emotions and feelings according to rhythm, mode, or tempo. The writer can also use rhythms to express states of mind and feelings related to the plot. Furthermore, many literary texts explicitly reference great musical works, particularly those of classical music.

Indeed, song is the ideal, even necessary, ground for the encounter between literary expression (poetry) and music. It not only ensures their conjunction but also fuses them to create a single artistic unity. Even though it contains several components (poetry, music, voice, etc.), it can only be studied as a complete semantic unit.

This issue explores the relationship between music and literature, insofar as the encounter between these two arts gives rise to other artistic forms. What is the role of each art in poetry, song, musical works, songs, nathems…? How is music introduced into literary texts?

Article proposals should fall within one of the following research areas:

- Narratives and literary themes integrated into musical works.
- Rhythm, harmony, polyphony, and the symphony in literary works.
- Writers-musicians and musicians-writers.
- The dialogue between music and literature: exchange and understanding.
