Abstract

This panel examines how Asian diasporic communities adapt and transform religious practices in transnational contexts. By focusing on lived religion in Asian diasporic cultures, the session highlights adaptation, negotiation, identity reconfiguration, and hybrid worship forms. It invites both theoretical and empirical contributions on survival, transmission, ritual modification, and the impact of digital media.

Key Questions

·       Why, and to what extent, is lived religion foundational for the survival of diasporic communities?

·       What does the operation of lived religion reveal about belief systems in Asian migrant contexts?

·       How does religion sustain connections between diasporic communities, host societies, and homelands?

·       In what ways have ritual practices (temple worship, ancestor veneration, fasting, festivals) been modified in multicultural contexts?

·       What hybrid religious forms emerge from transnational religious networks and interfaith encounters?

·       How have digital communication and social media reshaped lived religion among younger generations?

Format & Outcomes

Format: 90?minute panel with 4–6 papers and discussion.
Outcomes: Comparative insights into transnational religious practices, documentation of hybrid forms, contributions to theory on lived religion, and strengthened scholarly networks.
