Rethinking Cultural Mediation in Global Media
NeMLA 2027 – Panel
 
How does culture change as it travels across languages, media, technologies, and national borders? What roles do translators, audiences, institutions, platforms, and emerging technologies play in shaping how cultural meanings are represented, circulated, and received?
This panel invites interdisciplinary papers that rethink cultural mediation as a dynamic process through which meanings, identities, and narratives are produced, transformed, negotiated, and contested in global media. Rather than approaching mediation as neutral transmission, the panel considers the human, institutional, technological, political, and aesthetic forces that shape cultural circulation.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
·      Translation, adaptation, and cultural mediation
·      Multilingual, transnational, and global media
·      Representation, identity, and belonging
·      Film, television, literature, and digital media
·      Audience reception and cross-cultural interpretation
·      Digital platforms and participatory cultures
·      Cultural memory and the circulation of narratives
·      Ethics and politics of cultural representation
·      Accessibility and inclusion
·      AI, algorithms, and technological mediation
·      Emerging forms of cultural production and exchange
Theoretical, historical, empirical, comparative, and practice-based approaches are welcome. We especially encourage interdisciplinary work that creates dialogue among cultural studies, media studies, translation studies, literary studies, communication, digital humanities, and related fields.
 
Please submit a 200–300-word abstract and a brief bio through the NeMLA submission portal by September 30, 2026. All proposals must be submitted through the official NeMLA portal.
