The rapid integration of AI tools into the higher education landscape offers opportunities and challenges. Establishing robust guidelines enables institutions to maximize AI’s potential while mitigating risks, particularly in preserving academic integrity. This panel examines implementing and designing AI policies that address the ethical and practical challenges raised by AI tools in higher education. It also aims to propose solutions based on the perspectives of faculty, students, and administrators.

The advanced nature of AI tools and their ongoing rapid development pose challenges in academic settings, as policy implementation requires timely input from diverse stakeholders. This panel invites papers on AI policies at the classroom, departmental, or institutional levels that address the use of AI tools. Contributors are encouraged to draw on their expertise and focus on risks to academic integrity. Topics may include the successful application of AI policies in classrooms and for assignments, ethical considerations of AI applications in academia, and the use of AI to support governance in academic contexts.

The Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) is calling for presentations on the topic of AI policies in higher education for its forthcoming conference. We welcome papers examining the integration, implementation, and impact of AI policies at all levels, including classroom, departmental, or institutional settings, and exploring both ethical and practical applications of AI in academia. Topics may include classroom AI guidelines, institutional AI frameworks, and effective strategies for AI adoption in the context of higher education.
