The last decades have witnessed the emergence of numerous studies and initiatives aimed at reassessing the cultural significance of modernism in the Iberian Peninsula. Though varied in scope and implications, this newer scholarship shares a common impetus: to move beyond narrow historical frameworks and methodologies by approaching the modernist period through multilingual, transnational, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Building on this ongoing process of reassessment, this panel invites papers that shed new light on the complexities of Iberian modernisms. Contributors are encouraged to approach the topic from a wide range of perspectives. Papers may engage with textual or visual materials produced in Spain and Portugal between 1890 and 1936, or reflect more broadly on the construction of modernism as a historiographical category. Proposals may focus on a particular Iberian tradition (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, Basque) or undertake comparative analyses across linguistic, cultural, or national boundaries. Interdisciplinary approaches that examine how broader social, scientific, and philosophical developments shaped Iberian modernisms are especially encouraged, as are papers that engage with non-canonical authors and traditionally excluded voices.
