The era of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) imposes new challenges and opportunities for language teaching. Often, AI tools are trained predominantly on data from the Global North, which can reproduce colonial biases, standardize dialects, and prioritize hegemonic linguistic norms. In line with NeMLA 2027's theme, "Empowering Communities," this roundtable invites researchers, educators, and activists to reflect on how decolonial approaches and translanguaging pedagogies can subvert these algorithmic logics within Hispanic and Lusophone studies.

We seek proposals that investigate practices in and from the Global South that use, adapt, or critically question AI tools in language classrooms, regardless of the target language. What methodological strategies can we adopt to ensure that technologies act as allies in valuing linguistic plurality, rather than agents of cultural erasure?

We welcome proposals for short presentations that address topics such as, but not limited to:

· Critical AI literacy in language teaching and learning environments.

· Active methodologies that interconnect AI tools with translanguaging practices.

· Epistemological resistance and the identification/mitigation of algorithmic biases.

· The development of decolonial curricula or teaching materials supported by (or in opposition to) emerging technologies.

How can language teaching resist algorithmic hegemony? This roundtable focuses on the Global South to discuss the intersection between decoloniality, translanguaging practices, and Artificial Intelligence, with a special focus on the realities and challenges of Spanish-speaking and Lusophone contexts. Our goal is to explore critical pedagogical strategies that empower communities and value marginalized linguistic repertoires amid the rapid integration of new technologies into education.
