Panel Title: Geopolitical Realignments and Historical Imprints: Civilisational Narratives in the Caspian Region’s Transnational Context
The global landscape of power and geopolitics is changing at an increasing pace, giving rise to new alliances at multiple scales. In this evolving picture, the Caspian region, broadly defined, is significant due to its strategic position bordering historic and contemporary powers, its vast landmass, resources, and ethnolinguistic and historical diversity. This emerging scenario brings into sharp focus the enduring impact of historical and civilisational imprints on contemporary geopolitical and cultural developments.
This panel invites scholarly papers that explore the dynamics of these imprints, considering, but not limited to, the following themes:
- The cultural and historical narratives of regional realignments.
- The reimagining of histories to forge new alliances and partnerships.
- Negotiation of divergent historical narratives and their implications for national and regional identities.
- Invocation of civilisational affiliations and the markers used to define these affiliations, including language and tangible or intangible heritage.
- Processes and actors involved in civilisational shifts and the delineation of new boundaries at various scales.
- The cultural underpinnings of national and transnational ideologies.
- History, heritage, and culture in statecraft and state identities.
We seek contributions that engage with these themes from transnational and international perspectives, addressing the cultural, economic, and security implications of these shifts. Scholars are encouraged to examine how historical legacies are mobilised in the present to shape future trajectories and regional imaginaries.
Keywords: Central Eurasia, historical legacy, ethnolinguistic diversity, geopolitical realignment, civilisational affiliations, regional identity, cultural heritage, transnationalism, internationalism, geopolitical dynamics.
